    Virginia Man Wins Hunt/Buried SUV

VIRGINIA MAN DIGS UP BURIED VOLVO IN WORLDWIDE TREASURE HUNT FOR BURIED SUV

In a surprise twist, Volvo awards all seven- pirate finalists with an amazing treasure: a new Volvo vehicle of their own

(Abaco Island, Bahamas) August 10, 2006 — Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrg! Hear me now, scallywags, the treasure’s done been found! David Hutz, a 30 year-old man from Herndon, Va., yesterday reached true pirate status when he uncovered a buried Volvo XC90 V8 SUV in the Islands of the Bahamas after a challenging two month global, multi-media treasure hunt for the vehicle that Volvo Car Corporation secretly hid as part of its sponsorship of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

David Hutz a computer programmer from Herndon, Va. competed in a grueling, clue-filled search conducted by foot, boat, motor vehicle and helicopter in a competition reminiscent of reality TV shows. Upon completion of the race, he announced that he will be giving the car to his wife, Sheila Hutz. He was joined by six other finalists who also reached the final leg of the search, including two others from the United States as well as from Japan, United Kingdom, Spain and Austria.

Volvo surprises each finalist with new vehicle
The treasure hunt’s biggest surprise came when Volvo announced that all seven finalists would walk away with booty even Captain Jack Sparrow would be proud of: a new Volvo vehicle.

These individuals were the first among their respective nations to complete a fun, yet challenging, online treasure hunt presented by Volvo that launched on June 12, concluded four weeks later and elicited 52,000 participants in the U.S. alone. They arrived on the Islands of the Bahamas earlier this week unaware of the location of the final leg until their aircraft landed.

The seven competed in a series of mental and physical challenges on the islands that either eliminated them from competition or advanced them to the buried vehicle. After Hutz determined the final location, assistants dug up the $82,000 Volvo and presented him with the keys. Volvo also surprised the other finalists with keys to a new Volvo at the conclusion of the hunt.

Individuals worldwide will have a view all the excitement of the historic hunt when Volvo premieres a series of Webisodes chronicling the Hunt at www.volvocars.us/thehunt on August 25.

Other finalists in the Hunt included:

    •    Jenny Buckalew, 35, Newnan, Ga.
    •    James Hutz, 57, Carefree, Ariz.
    •    Karl Lloyd, 33, Surrey, England
    •    Susanne Kalintsch, 44, Trieben, Austria
    •    Akihiro Horibe, 36, Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan
    •    Jose Luis Dominguez Monge, 31, Valladolid, Spain

The buried one-of-a-kind, Volvo XC90 features a variety of elements inspired by Pirates of the Caribbean, including menacing graphics from the film, black leather seats, custom painted 20 inch wheels and more.

“While it would have been a lot of fun to watch Captain Jack Sparrow cruise the Caribbean Islands in this summer’s Pirates of the Caribbean, it just didn’t make sense,” said Anne Bélec, president and chief executive officer of Volvo Cars of North America. “So, we sought a more creative way to celebrate our partnership with Disney, and we think it’s been a phenomenal success for Volvo and we hope a lot of fun for would-be pirates worldwide, particularly these seven finalists.”

           To whom it may concern,
Iwrote in on your other Volvo site, to tell you about a great  need my husband has, his kidneys failed after a massive stroke, all of our savings has been depleted to pay Doctor and Hospital bills.
We own a 1998 SUV, but I ruined the engine by driving it too hot. Don (MY HUSBANd) has to make a 40 mile trip three days a week to receive his Dialysis treatments. don has been my rock, he helped me rear three of my children, one of which went into the Marines, my two girls are wonderful mothers and my baby girl finished college just about four years ago. Don made all of this possible, he has avery strict work ethic and has taught my children that you work hard and surround yourself with persons of graet intelligence, seek wisdom, and always giveto those less fortunate. My children and I would like to give back to Don and he desperately needs a vehicle, my son and others are growing weary of the many trips and the State does not furnish transportation across state lines for the purposes of medical treatment. Iwill be very frank with you, we are on a fixed income of 1303.00 dollars a month, we stand to lose everything, but thats okay, as long as Ican take care of Dons Meds and make sure he is in Cincinnati for his lifesaving
treatments. Christmas is almost here and Dons b- day is 1-4.  please help us give back to the man who always gave so much.

                                                                                                                     Sincerely,

    Volvo,
Thank you Thank you!!  What a wonderful treasure hunt!!  I had such a fantastic time researching and having live discussions with some of the best treasure hunters around.  I agree with Michael about having to go back through all the completed sites to look for something different.  That was brilliant.  One would only notice the changes if they had been there.  Also, a nice twist was that all the final puzzles were indeed different.  Unfortunately, many extremely supersmart people entered their answers immediately before realizing there was a twist.
It was also an extremely classy move for all finalists to receive a vehicle.  Volvo definitely has my respect...
    Until next time, me pirates!!
    Forever hunting,
    Redsonja :)

I just looked at the photos on The Hunt site, and it looks like they had alot of fun!  This was really one of the most enjoyable online contests I've ever had the pleasure of playing, and I hope you do something like this again in the future.
My one wish is that you hadn't let the Japan site start the final puzzles hours before everyone else.  It looks like people practiced on those puzzles which gave them a leg up when the time came.  If they were the odd ones out because of time zones, they should have started hours after everyone else.  That said, having everyone go back to the early puzzles and see what had changed was pure genius. I felt that the early puzzles weren't eliminating any of the competition as all the answers could be found online, but by making people go back and see what had changed, you really made it important to have played those puzzles.  Fun fun fun!  Thanks again, and I look forward to watching the videos of the final competition.
